Could It Be....?

Recently there was media coverage regarding a grizzly bear attack in Yellowstone National Park. The bear was captured and killed the next day and a posthumous exam performed to help give insight into its behavior. Of note was its extremely poor body condition - it was very thin. The investigative team determined that the bear's vegetarian diet (of approximately two years) combined with a parasite load contributed not only to its poor physical condition, but to the predatory behavior which culminated in the attack.

A bear specialist is quoted as saying:

“She obviously was hurting for higher value foods. What caused her mentally to do that, we don’t know. There are a lot of bears that are nutritionally challenged at times that don’t exhibit that type of behavior.”

Which brings to mind the following question...is this what is wrong with animal rights fanatics? Are their vegetarian or vegan diets resulting in aggression towards those of us who enjoy our animals, their raising, breeding and training as well as the daily interaction? Is it the lack of "higher value foods" that causes their almost savage attempts to rend apart the animal-owner bond that we enjoy and the endless pursuit of eliminating pets or any animal usage from the earth?

Thankfully, grizzly attacks are rare.

Unfortunately, the attacks of the animal rights fanatics are not, and well on the increase.

HSUS' "Whiney Wayne" Spreads More Manure

An interesting article was posted to one of the pet law lists I am on, and I got pretty disgusted at Wayne Pacelle spreading more crap defending the false conception of HSUS (whose true goal is eliminating animal breeding and ownership entirely).

The HSUS said Kunzleman's comments are an unfair representation of the work done by the HSUS. The organization uses its money to contribute to animal shelters in ways that are not represented in specific dollar amounts awarded to shelters, said HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle.

"We offer continuing education for shelter directors, and we offer a number of education opportunities and help shelters improve, and none of those efforts are represented in direct donations to shelters," Pacelle said.

O.....K.....

What Pacelle has failed to include in his statement (lie by omission?) is that shelter directors PAY for "continuing education." It is not donated. "Education opportunities" to help shelters improve - those are paid for as well, not donated. Under the guise of "consulting fees" such as the thousands charged to the Lied shelter in Nevada some years ago. They charged almost $23K for a review of San Luis Obispo County (CA) Animal Services in 2008. NOT DONATED. With the millions upon millions of dollars taken in with various "pity this and that" campaigns, you would think they could spare donating that consulting fee so as not to cause more financial hardship on already strapped shelters.

They even offer a 108-page report for purchase on their website (see it here). What is advocated inside it? How-to's on getting restrictive legislation passed against dog fanciers such as mandatory spay/neuter; and mandatory breeder permits/licensing and other breeding restrictions.

I guess I could give Whiney Wayne credit for telling a smidgen of truth when he says "none of those efforts are represented in direct donations to shelters." Exactly. They are not donations to shelters - they are payments from shelters to HSUS. That is what HSUS LOVES more than anything else - money.

I am certainly not a fan of pet store puppies - but I also realize that serious dog fanciers/hobbyists can not fill the desires of everyone who wants to bring a puppy into their home - there are just too many JQP's that want tiny toy dogs or the more popular breeds.

Unfortunately some folks are also not willing to undergo the scrutiny of responsible hobby breeders who want to make sure that the pups from their home go to a "forever home" where they will be well cared for their entire (and hopefully long) lives. Or they are not patient enough and want instant gratification - something a pet store seems to have in constant supply.

As a footnote...what do HSUS consultants advise when faced with a newborn litter of pups from a pit bull? Kill them. What did they advise the Lied shelter to do when animals at the overcrowded shelter may have been exposed to disease? Kill them (instead of donating some of their millions to help them). Oh...and they also disallowed purebred rescue groups to pull dogs and thereby relieve some of the burden on the shelter. What did they advise when faced with the seized Vick dogs and experienced pit bull rescues were volunteering their services?

Kill them.

Please don't send these shysters any more $ and see them for what they truly are. A menace.

Lotsa Nerve (HSUS Holds Out Its Hand, Again)

A fundraising plea from HSUS' "Whining Wayne (Pacelle)" was recently shared on a pet laws list I am a member of. Here is a portion of the text:

I just got this message from Jennifer Fearing, the YES! on Prop 2 campaign manager, who’s working around the clock to get Proposition 2 passed. And, to be perfectly honest, we’re facing a severe shortage of funds to keep our TV ads on the air next week.

Read her message to me below and then please, give whatever you can to help us finish this fight.

It's a darn shame that "truth in advertising" apparently doesn't hold true for fundraising by these types of organizations. HSUS has over $100 million in its coffers and they're saying they can't afford some TV time??

So What's the Difference??

A disturbing article made the rounds on some of my chat lists yesterday which brought tears to my eye. I cannot imagine myself shooting dogs that I do not want to provide minor medical care for. Even though dogs are, for all practical and legal purposes, considered property - I do not find such actions to be ethical. This case, involving Amish commercial breeders, I find tragic.

So much of the recent punitive and overbearing legislation trying to outlaw dog/pet breeding and the keeping of sexually intact animals is the result of attempting to "legislate ethics". As a result...ethical breeders are the ones being harmed the most...not commercial breeders...not irresponsible dog owners. So various animal rights groups are able to get these types of laws passed through local and state government - and they keep knocking on the federal government's door as well!

But animal rights groups aren't really about helping animals - they are about harming the human animal. They hate people, and they don't particularly care for animals either. Witness PeTA's euthanization rate - 97% for 2007. Whose employees/followers dumped the bodies of freshly killed pets, who they had promised the people they took them from that they would find homes for them and almost immediately put the final needle into them once they were in their killing van. They didn't care about those animals - they treated them like garbage.

Now...most folks would comment on the commercial breeders' actions mentioned above with something like..."well, what can you expect from puppy millers after all."

Okay....well...here is another example of a mass slaughter performed by a "humane" shelter that was too lazy to take care of a health issue at their facility, as reported by No-Kill advocate and "Redemption" author, Nathan Winograd - check out this story. Oh...and by the way...this is a "HSUS Partner Shelter" - and they killed over twice as many pets as the Zimmermans in one day. Different method, but the same result.

They are no better in my eyes.

The Real Wayne Pacelle Legacy

Nathan Winograd has written quite the informative essay on the true colors of HSUS and its "pimp", Wayne Pacelle. It's truly disgusting how they've pulled the wool over the eyes of Americans while they chip away at our rights to enjoy our animals by using ill-gotten (by deception) donations to further punitive laws aimed at ending any type of animal usage...and this includes the keeping of pets! Beware This Dog - the HSUS

Yes - I said beware of the HSUS. Beware of their fundraising tactics. HSUS is becoming more and more anti-breeder....even anti-pet-owner....as they become more and more like PeTA. I have even seen them referred to as "PeTA in a suit". They have a cleaner, slicker image than PeTA - but they are just as dangerous to dog breeders and pet owners - they are leaning more towards an animal rights agenda, as opposed to animal *welfare*.

Their latest cash cow - the Michael Vick indictment for conspiracy and accusations of dog fighting, and the seizure of his dogs, allegedly used in a dog fighting ring. I say "allegedly" since one is supposed to be considered innocent before proven guilty. I certainly suspect him of it personally - he's not exactly an innocent character based on past actions - and I've seen his kennel web site. HSUS is using this latest media blitz to line their coffers. They say it will be used to help in their campaign against animal fighting. That's what they SAY. Yah.....riiiiiiiight.

In their original plea for donations - they implied that they were directly involved in caring for Vick's dogs that were seized and needed money for that "care". The web site page has since changed, although one was found in the Google cache and a screenshot is available here. They have since been reported to the FBI for fraudulent solicitation.

When Katrina devastated the southern gulf coast, HSUS moved in and bullied private rescue groups who were present and working to assist pets and their owners who had been affected by the floods and other damage from the storms. They flooded the internet with requests for donations to "help these hurricane victims". They raked in millions. There has been no accounting for the almost $20 million that was raised for the Katrina pets by the HSUS in that fundraising scheme. The HSUS is currently under investigation by the Louisiana Attorney General for their handling of that situation and misuse of collected funds.

HSUS doesn't even operate a shelter! They DO have corporate offices in D.C. where they happily process their donations (obtained through false pretenses, it would seem) and work with lobbyists to get legislation passed that would eliminate dog breeding...one of the first steps in eliminating the ownership of animals as pets. PeTA at least has a shelter - although according to published stats they kill 83% of the animals their shelter takes in. Although keep in mind that apparently not all of the animals they pick up even make it to their shelter! Some are killed in the back of their van and dumped in the trash bins of local businesses! Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Don't Litter", which of course is used by animal rights organizations to discourage breeding of animals!

If you are still contemplating writing that check in response to a fundraising plea from the HSUS, take into account the following quotes from Wayne Pacelle, president of HSUS:

"I don't have a hands-on fondness for animals...To this day I don't feel bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I'm kind to them, but there's no special bond between me and other animals." quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 251.

"We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding." quoted in Animal People, May, 1993.

When asked if he envisioned a future without pets: "If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don't want to see another dog or cat born." Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 266.

I know I am putting my pen and checkbook away!
